As I sat on the panel at the recent Spark Suicide Prevention Event in Raleigh, NC, I was struck by the power of our collective voices. Each of us, whether suicide survivors or those who’ve lost loved ones to suicide, shared a common goal: to bring mental health stigma into the light and foster open, honest conversations about an issue that affects so many.
The Purpose Behind the Spark
The event, aptly named “Break the Silence & Ignite the SPARK to Eradicate Suicide,” was more than just a panel discussion. It was a catalyst for change, a beacon of hope, and a safe space for vulnerability and healing. As I shared my story alongside fellow panelists, several themes emerged that I believe are crucial in our ongoing fight against suicide.
Reaching Out and Connecting
One of the most powerful messages that resonated throughout the event was the importance of reaching out to others. In my own journey as a survivor of loss from suicide, I’ve learned that connection is not just helpful – it’s essential.
From about minute 47 to 50 in the panel discussion in the video below, I delved into the value of connection. Building a community around our family and friends is more than just about having a support system; it’s about changing how we perceive ourselves and our circumstances. When we connect, we create a network of understanding and empathy that can be life-saving.
Expressing Love and Light
Another common thread in our stories was the power of expressing love and light. In the face of darkness, these acts of kindness and positivity can be transformative. As suicide survivor stories were shared, it became clear that even the smallest gestures of love and support can make a significant difference.
The Crucial Role of Hope
Hope emerged as a central theme in our discussion. Between minutes 21 and 23:30, I specifically addressed the concept of hope. In the depths of despair, hope can seem elusive, but it’s often the lifeline that pulls us through. As someone who has experienced loss, I’ve learned that hope isn’t always about grand gestures or dramatic turnarounds. Sometimes, it’s found in the quiet moments of perseverance, in the decision to take one more step forward.
Vulnerability: The Strength in Sharing
One of the most striking aspects of the panel was the raw vulnerability displayed by each speaker. Whether recounting attempts or sharing the pain of loss, each story was a testament to the strength found in openness.

Finding Meaning Through Chaos
What struck me was how each of us, despite our different experiences, had found a way through the chaos. We discovered that by sharing our stories and connecting with others, we could find meaning and purpose. This journey of finding alignment between our values and personal solutions – be they related to health, spirituality, or other aspects of life – was unique to each of us but universally powerful.
Creating Safe Spaces
The panel had a profound discussion about the importance of creating safe spaces. At around the 1:14 mark, I shared my personal experience with the healing power of nature. For me, the outdoors has been an invaluable safe space in my healing journey. It’s a reminder that in suicide prevention awareness we need to consider diverse approaches to creating environments where people feel secure and supported.
The Role of Energy Management
From about 1:40 to 1:42 in the video, I touched on a topic close to my heart: the importance of energy management in overall health and wellness. Understanding and managing our energy is integral to our mental and emotional well-being too.
Making a Difference: Our Ongoing Commitment
Towards the end of the panel, we each shared how we’re contributing to the cause. At around 1:51 in the video, I had the opportunity to talk about Liberty Oaks and our mission. It’s a reminder that the fight against suicide doesn’t end with awareness – it continues with action and ongoing support.
The Spark Beyond the Event
The Spark Suicide Prevention Event wasn’t just a one-day affair. It included a wellness experience and a “SPARK in the Park” prayer vigil at Dix Park, emphasizing the multi-faceted approach needed in building supportive communities. The event also featured wellness practitioners offering tools for mental health support, underlining the importance of practical, accessible resources.
Moving Forward: Your Role in Prevention
As I reflect on this powerful event, I’m reminded that each of us has a role to play in suicide prevention. Whether it’s reaching out to a friend, creating safe spaces in our communities, or supporting organizations like the HOPE Institute, our actions matter.
Action Steps:
1. Reach out to someone today – a simple message can make a world of difference.
2. Educate yourself about the signs of suicide risk and available resources.
3. Practice vulnerability in your own life – it encourages others to do the same.
4. Create or participate in safe spaces in your community.
5. Support organizations working in suicide prevention and mental health awareness.
Remember, breaking the silence around suicide is not a one-time event – it’s an ongoing commitment to fostering hope, connection, and support in our communities.
Together, we can ignite a spark of change that saves lives.
